Healthcare Projects > QE Hospital - New Mental Healthcare Unit [BNH001]
The Mental Health Unit (MHU) for the QE Hospital involved two separate structures of sizeable foot prints namely Speciality Services and South Locality.
Both buildings were linked together and constructed in tandem on one green field site encompassed by residential and university buildings. The client for the overall project was the National Health Trust with the principal contractor being Balfour Beatty operating under the banner of BNHJV (Birmingham New Hospitals Joint Venture).
The project as a whole was seen as a flagship for sustainability during construction and setting new boundaries of health and safety. Parkstone Construction embraced both these regimes in applying their knowledge and experience to all activities; establishing higher benchmarks with compliance seen as a minimum requirement.
Parkstone Construction were installed on site in January 2006 and completed all works within an 11 month period terminating in late November 2006. However, there were numerous months spent in preparation behind the scenes prior to commencement ensuring planning, procurement, health / safety and design were addressed to the finest detail identified as paramount to the success of a project laced with complexity and pit falls.
Although the MHU consisted of two buildings the construction activities carried out by Parkstone Construction were of a similar vein on both; albeit in varying degrees and differing design.
Parkstone Construction undertook the ground and sub structure works for the MHU in its entirerity.
Core operations included:
- Bulkearth works and excavation resulting in the removal of over 80,000 tonnes of spoil and importation of 13,000 tonnes of crushed concrete with 10,000 tonnes of type 1
- Installation of over 2km of drainage up to 600mm in diameter
- Construction of over 600 linear metres of reinforced concrete retaining walls up to 8 metres in height
- Installation of 12,000 square metres of waterproof tanking system combined with sheet drainage
- Construction of all associated car parks and roads
- Construction of 8000 square metres of reinforced concrete ground bearing slab and over 1000 foundation bases / reinforced concrete ground beams.
Mindful that all activities involved a high input of design requirement and logistic difficulty our element of works were delivered within programme, in a safe environment and to an exceptional level of quality.
