Please note the additional comments detailed below in respect of item No.5.

To reduce head office carbon emissions by 2.5%..

As a growing international business, we must set an example by measuring and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. By setting targets that stretch our business. And by committing to do this in a public way, so we are transparent and fully accountable for what we achieve. We must also help to stimulate the development of low carbon technology, and work with our suppliers and others to deliver significant CO2 reductions throughout our supply chain end to end.

Speech by Sir Terry Leahy given to invited stakeholders at a joint Forum for the Future and Tesco event in Central London January 18th 2007.

As Parkstone are a successful part of the Tesco supply chain with our contribution in delivering the foundations for new stores, we have had demands made of us to comply with their objectives and reduce our own carbon emissions. It does not end there, we have been asked to present for scrutiny our Parkstone Footprint that includes – means of measurement, calculation, measuring devices, and significantly our company objectives that detail a reduction in our carbon emissions.

To achieve this we have to target areas of the business that are measurable, have four walls (a volume) for example Head Office and Tamworth Yard. We have calculated fuel usage, gas, water, electricity and converted the figure into carbon emissions, In addition to this the admin staff have calculated the fuel usages of all company cars form the PHH records; again this is a measurable item and can be converted into emissions.

These items will form the Parkstone Carbon Footprint presentation.

The big issue is achieving the Parkstone Group objective of a 2.5% reduction. In all honesty this is not going to be easy. 2.5% is achievable but it needs all of us to contribute.

Detailed below are some small changes to our current practices that should help meet our objective.

  1. Turn off lights when you leave your room. Do not have them switched on unnecessarily.

  2. If radiators are too warm turn the thermostat down or off completely.

  3. Close doors to retain heat and also prevent spread of fire.

  4. Do not leave electrical equipment on standby.

  5. Switch off at the socket appliances that are not being used.

  6. Inflate car/vehicle tyres to their correct pressure and maintain to reduce resistance.

  7. Do not carry unnecessary loads in vans or boots of cars.

  8. If attending a meeting try to car share to reduce journeys.

  9. Staying at or within speed limits increases driver safety but it also reduces CO2 emissions.

  10. Less stopping and starting of the vehicle reduces CO2 emissions.

  11. Over revving accelerates emissions.

  12. Idling is wasting fuel.

There maybe many more items to help reduce our emissions if you have any please let the Health, Safety and  Environmental Manager know.

Your assistance in achieving our objective would be greatly appreciated.
